Albis Optoelectronics is a leading designer, developer and manufacturer of high-speed single channel and array photodiode components for fiber optic datacom and telecom applications. The diversified product portfolio supports all speeds, from DC to 2.5, 10 and 40 Gbit/s. The Rueschlikon based fabrication facilities offer full in-house production from front-end to back-end and includes a class 100 clean room and extensive test and qualification laboratories. New products for emerging markets as well as customer specific modifications are developed by a team of experienced scientists and engineers. The company focuses on high reliable and high quality products fulfilling Telcordia GR-468 and MIL-STD-883E requirements.
Full In-House Production and Testing

In 2001 the Zurich fabrication facility started mass-production and has produced millions of photodiodes since. Chip design, manufacturing and testing is all done in-house thus ensuring a constant high level of product quality.

One of the biggest challenges facing today’s optical networks is guaranteeing 99.999% availability at an affordable cost. This challenge can only be met by applying stringent quality criteria starting at bare chip level in order to avoid failure of higher level, more costly modules. For our photodiodes this means that they undergo a rigorous testing program including:

100% on wafer dark current measurements
100% on wafer forward current measurements
100% on wafer capacitance measurements

In addition, a 100% visual inspection following MIL-STD-883E is carried out as well as responsivity and bond pull testing on a sample basis for each processed wafer.
Telcordia GR-468 Qualification

After passing all the previous testing stages, a photodiode is likely to have a long lifetime without any performance degradation. This is confirmed in our reliability laboratory where lifetime is tested under stressed conditions such as high temperature and high humidity. Reliability testing was started back in 1997 and since then more than 120 billion normalized device hours were accumulated. This vast amount of data is analyzed in detail in our extensive reliability reports that have satisfied the demands of the most quality conscious Tier 1 customers in our industry.

20 Years of Photodiode Experience

Development of the Albis state-of-the-art photodiodes started in the mid-eighties at the Institute of Quantum Electronics at ETH, the world-renowned Zurich University of Technology. The advanced product technology soon caught interest and first customers started field-deployment of the ETH photodiode technology at the beginning of the nineties. After a spin-off from ETH in 1995, Albis photodiodes were made available to a broad customer base fulfilling their stringent requirements on product performance and quality. Customers today still benefit from this long history of product development and can rely on photodiodes with long life spans that show little wear out and no random failures.
